From 1990 to 1992 participate to the GRIP (Greenland ice core project) project, for the deep drilling in the central of Greenland ice Sheet, where develop part of the PhD thesis. Participing to Greenland Ice Core Project (GRIP) from 1990 to 1992 for the mineral dust characterization. Participate to the 10 Antarctic field seasons (from 1992 to 2008) of  Italian Antarctic Expeditions, for firn drillings in the Northern Victoria Land and EPICA project (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) in Dome C, and Talos Dome Ice Core Project (TALDICE). Has been PI in the UE AlpClim Project on the climatic characterization from Alpine ice cores, PI of IMONT (Italian Institute for Mountain Research) project CryoAlp and 3 ISPESL (Italian Institute for Work Safety) projects on the anthropogenic impact on the European Alps area. Form 2002 are Italian representative of the EPICA Steering Committee. Chief scientist in 2004-2008 TALDICE ice core seasons. From 2003 are Italian Representative of the Paleoclimate Committee of the International Quaternary Association (INQUA). Member of the Italian Quaternary Association (AIQUA), Italian Physical Geography and Geomorphology Association (AIGEO) and Italian Glaciological Committee (CGI).  Involved in the IPICS (International Partnership for Ice Core Sciences) for the “The oldest ice core”, “40 ky network” and “2ky Arrey” tasks.
The main field of research are related to the characterization atmospheric dust, mainly in Antarctica, Greenland and Alpine areas, for long-term paleoclimatic influences of mineral phases on the atmosphere. Identification of the source areas of mineral dust and evolution of the solid charge in atmosphere in the last 800 ky. Participating at the main European ice core drilling projects for reconstruction of past climate changes, and the environmental changes on Antarctica, Greenland and European Alps area.
